Caption: Parasitic plant. Light micrograph of a dodder plant (Cuscuta sp., right) parasitising the stem of another plant (centre to upper left). The dodder is a vine-like rootless and leafless plant that is unable to produce its own energy through photosynthesis, or gather its own water. Instead it inserts haustoria or suckers (one seen here at centre right) into the host plant's stem and steals nutrients and water. Magnification: x40 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
