Caesarian section delivery. Surgeons preparing to perform a Caesarian section to deliver a woman's baby. In this operation, the uterus is cut open to free the baby. It is usually performed when the birth is likely to be difficult or hazardous, for instance in a breech delivery. Increasingly pregnant women are electing to have a Caesarian section to prevent the pain of natural childbirth. This practice is not condoned by most medical professionals, however. Photographed at the Saint Vincent de Paul Hospital in Paris, France.
