Caption: Premature baby. Premature baby in an incubator, connected to an electrocardiogram (ECG). An incubator is an airtight box which provides ideal conditions in which a baby can survive. Temperature, humidity and oxygen levels are all monitored. The ECG monitors the baby's heart rate, which is shown as a green trace on the monitor at lower right. Premature babies have not fully developed, and are therefore ill-equipped for life outside the uterus. They are more prone to infection, and often cannot regulate blood sugar levels or body temperature. However, if a premature baby is kept under close observation, there is a very good chance it will survive.
