Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Cocaine baby. Face of a premature baby whose mother was a cocaine addict. Cocaine abuse may result in both a premature birth, and the addiction of the unborn child. This tiny, unwell baby, shows typical features of pre- maturity. It lacks subcutaneous fat, has a thin skin, and is covered with downy hair called lanugo. Apart from its immaturity, which would include immature internal organs, a pregnancy involving drug abuse may cause developmental abnormalities. In addition, this baby may suffer from cocaine withdrawal symptoms for which it must be treated. Cocaine is an addictive alkaloid drug which stimulates the central nervous system.
