Caption

Scots pine tree stem. Polarised light micrograph of a cross-section through the stem of a Scots pine tree (Pinus sylvestris), showing resin canals. In the yellow wood the canals can be seen in red, and in the outer red wood (the cortex), they can be seen outlined in black. The canals produce resin that contains turpentine. The turpentine stops bacteria, fungi and insects from decomposing or eating the stems or leaves.
