Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Premature baby. Nurse attending to a premature baby in an incubator. Its heartbeat is being monitored by the electrocardiogram (ECG) electrode attached to its chest. Its lung function is measured by electrodes attached to its stomach. The drip attached to its arm provides antibiotic drugs and iron and vitamin supplements into a vein (intravenously). Its breathing is maintained by a respirator, which supplies it with oxygen. Babies born before 37 weeks of development require constant monitoring in a contained environment. Their immune system and internal organs are under-developed and they have difficulty maintaining a constant body temperature.
