Temperature measurement. Nurse is using a digital thermometer in the ear of a young black girl. A digital thermometer is a modern version of the traditional glass mercury filled tube. It is used to record body temperature. It uses an electronic probe connected to a digital readout display. Measurements of body temperature are usually made from the mouth, armpit or rectum, but in this case the ear is used. Body temperature is under the control of the hypothalamus area of the brain and is maintained at 37 degrees Celsius (98 degrees Fahrenheit).
