Caption: Stachys lanata, commonly known as lamb's ears, a popular garden plant grown as ground cover & for its purple flowers. It is a silver foliage plant; the silver/grey effect being caused by a dense covering of hairs on the leaf surface. The furry mass of leaf hairs, giving rise to the popular name lamb's ears, serve several functions. They prevent undue water loss, limit the scalding effect of the sun & reflect damaging ultraviolet light away from the living cells. It is a half hardy plant found growing from the Caucasus to Iran.
