Caption: Ear examination. General Practice (GP) doctor using an otoscope to examine the ear of a young child. Otoscopes have a funnel shaped tip which is inserted into the ear. A bulb inside the otoscope provides illumination, and the doctor looks through a magnifying lens to improve the view. They are used to examine the ear canal and the eardrum. In some cases, problems behind the eardrum may be diagnosed. Children are more susceptible to ear infections than adults, as their eustachian tubes, which link the ear with the nasal cavity, are much shorter. This means infections of the nasal cavity can easily spread to the ear.
