Caption

Child with immune deficiency being tended by carers. In cases of severe immune deficiency, pathogens (disease-causing micro-organisms) that normally cause mild illness can be fatal. The child is in a sterile chamber to minimise the risk of infection. The carers can reach into the chamber using gloves set into the sides. Immune deficiency can be caused by exposure to radiation, infectious disease (such the acquired immune deficiency syndrome, AIDS) or a genetic defect (primary immune deficiency). Photographed at the Necker children's hospital, Paris, France.
