Paediatric examination. Doctor using a stethoscope to listen to a young girl's lungs. A stethoscope is used to listen to sounds within the body. The doctor has placed the diaphragm side of the stethoscope attachment on the girl's back, over her lungs. This diaphragm side is used to listen to low-pitched sounds. The sound of the girl's breathing is transmitted through the tube to earpieces in the doctor's ears. This will allow the doctor to detect disorders such as lung infections.
