Caption: Drip bag of broken-down milk mixture. The bag is connected to a nasogastric tube, used to pump-feed an unwell baby girl with the broken-down milk mixture. The 8 month old baby girl was born prematurely and has suffered from gastroschisis. Gastroschisis is an abdominal wall defect in which the intestines or other organs protrude outside the foetus. In this case the outer protruding section of intestine was removed surgically, a procedure that resulted in short bowel syndrome (SBS). SBS produces malabsorption, a condition in which the body cannot break down and/or absorb sufficient sugars, proteins or fats. Photographed at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, UK.
