Caption: Close-up of a cherry leaf in autumn showing the branching pattern of the veins (vascular tissue). The vascular tissue comprises the xylem, supplying water & minerals from the roots to the leaves & the phloem, which conduct the sugar manufactured in the leaves during photosynthesis to the rest of the plant. The veins are preserved as the rest of the leaf dies in autumn, due to the presence of lignin (a polymer resistant to decay) in the xylem.
