Caption: Grass & clover. Close-up of grass and clover (Tri- folium repens) growing together in rain. Grasses and clover together form the basis of the plant community in grazing pasture or hay meadows. In both types of plant the leaves grow up from active stems that creep along the ground. Because of this they are unharmed by grazing animals, and can rapidly colonize areas in which other plants would normally dominate. Clover lives in symbiosis (partnership) with bacteria that convert nitrogen in the air to soluble nitrates in the ground. As a result it enriches the soil and improves the pasture.
