Caption: Codiaeum leaf veins. Macrophotograph of veins in the leaf of the plant Codiaeum zeidii. Leaves of this evergreen shrub are highly pigmented, here in colours of red, yellow and green. A main vein (red) runs at centre; it contains vascular bundles which act as a tube system transporting liquid food and water to and from the leaf and through the plant. Smaller veins branch diagonally off the main vein, to create a network. This arrangement of veins branching diagonally from a central vein is a distinguishing characteristic of dicotyledonous plants.
