Caption: Autumn leaf. Macrophotograph of part of a sugar maple (Acer saccharum) leaf changing colour in autumn. Some leaf veins are seen (yellow). Leaves change colour in autumn as their green pigment chlorophyll is broken down in preparation for the leaves being shed. This reveals other pigments usually masked by the chlorophyll. Photographed in Hudson River Valley, New York, USA.
