Caption: Autumn leaf. Close-up of the surface of an oak leaf (Quercus sp.) showing autumn colour. The green pigment chlorophyll has been broken down in most places, revealing red pigments which are usually hidden. The veins lose their colour last, and thus can be seen as a pale network against the red. The leaf's main vein, the midrib, is seen running down centre.
