Caption: Larch needles (Larix sp. ) in autumn. The larch is a deciduous conifer, which sheds its needles in autumn to prevent water loss and frost damage over the winter period. The brown colour seen here is due to the breakdown of the green pigment chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight during photosynthesis. This breakdown reveals other pigments usually hidden by the chlorophyll. Photographed in England.
