Caption: Taking ear temperature. Feverish six-year-old boy has his temperature taken by a tympanic thermometer in the ear. The boy has a hot, flushed face and is sweating. The thermometer's high reading (38.62 degrees Celsius) indicates a fever (pyrexia). Fever (body temperature above 37 degrees Celsius) is usually caused by bacterial or viral infections. The body raises its temperature in an attempt to destroy the invading microorganisms. This thermometer works by measuring infrared emissions produced naturally by the tympanic membrane (eardrum). It then quickly converts them into an accurate measurement of the body's internal temperature.
