Caption: Light micrograph showing atrophic squamous cells from the cervix of a post-menopausal woman. Atrophic changes to the epithelial lining of the ectocervix and vagina occur following menopause (the cessation of menstruation) & are caused by a deficiency of female sex hormones. In smears, the cells appear clumped in large sheets. Cell nuclei are large & dark staining, with dense, pink- staining cytoplasm.
