Caption: Light micrograph of a cervical smear, showing mild dysplasia (graded CIN I), indicated by the blue- staining cells with large nuclei at top. Normal cells from the superficial layers of the squamous cervical epithelium are seen at bottom. These cells have small nuclei & red staining cytoplasm. The dysplastic cells at top resemble cells from the underlying outer intermediate layer in their shape, size and staining properties. The CIN (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia) grading refers to a spectrum of potentially cancerous changes. CIN 1 corresponds to mild dysplasia, CIN II to moderate dysplasia; CIN III includes severe dysplasia & carcinoma-in-situ.
