Caption: Light micrograph of a vaginal smear showing two eggs of the pinworm Enterobius vermicularis. This species of nematode is normally an inhabitant of the human intestine, where it causes enterobiasis, a disease common in children throughout the world. Female worms emerge from the anus at night, provoking intense itching. Worms occasionally enter the vulva to provoke a vaginal discharge. Enterobiasis is treated with piperazine compounds. Magnification: x400 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
