Caption: Light micrograph of a vaginal smear showing the effects of radiotherapy on the squamous epithelial cells. The pink-stained cell at top centre has taken on a bizarre shape, with a tail-like extension of its cytoplasm. An increase in the size of the cytoplasm of irradiated (benign) squamous cells is generally observed. Nuclei may remain normal or show a slight increase in size.
