Caption: Salpingitis. Illustration of the human fallopian tube, showing acute salpingitis. At centre is the ovary (white) with developing egg follicles seen on its surface. The fallopian tube (red, at left) is the route by which released eggs from the ovary pass to the uterus (top right). Here, the fallopian tube is inflamed, a condition known as salpingitis. It may be caused by infection, such as Chlamydia, bacterial gonorrhoea, tuberculosis. It may also follow childbirth, miscarriage, or induced abortion. Treatment includes analgesic drugs (painkiller) and antibiotics. Surgery may be performed if the fallopian tube is blocked or damaged, which may result in infertility.
