Caption: Cervical dysplasia after treatment. Colposcopy of the cervix (centre) after laser treatment for dysplasia. The cervix is a healthy pink colour, but the os (cervical canal) is considerably enlarged due to the destruction of the dysplasic cells by the laser. The concentrated source of high intensity light radiation destroys cells directly under the beam, whilst leaving adjacent cells undamaged. Dysplasia is abnormal cell growth in the cervical stratified squamous epithelium. There are 3 stages in cervical dysplasia, ranging from mild (CIN 1), to moderate (CIN 2) to severe (CIN 3) with early cancer.
