Caption: Cystocele. View of a swollen lump protruding out of the vagina. This is a cystocele, a swelling at the front and top of the vagina formed where the bladder pushes against weakened muscle tissue in the vaginal wall. This may be associated with the descent of the uterus from its normal position down into the vagina (prolapsed uterus). A cysto- cele may not cause any complications, but if the urethra is pulled out of position, stress inconti- nence might ensue (leakage of urine upon coughing, lifting or sneezing). Alternatively the bladder may not empty completely leading to a risk of infection. Treatment includes pelvic floor exer- cises to tighten the muscles and surgery.
