Caption: Polyps in the uterus. Colour doppler ultrasound scan of a transverse section through the uterus, showing vascularisation due to polyps. Polyps (outgrowths) have developed on the mucous membrane in the uterus, causing formation of blood vessels (red) around them. Bleeding polyps may need to be surgically removed. This ultrasound scan was made by Dr Philippe Saada. Saada obtains such high- definition images by linking doppler ultrasound to a numeric colour video. Doppler ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to determine whether organs are diseased, and can register moving particles like blood. Photographed at the Ultra- sound Centre of La Marjolaine at Montrouge, Paris.
