Caption: Ovarian cancer. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a slice through a woman's body, showing an enormous ovarian cancer tumour (top, green). Also visible are the kidneys (yellow), spine (pink, lower centre) and ribs (pink, outer abdomen). Body fat appears blue. Ovarian cancer is a common form of cancer in women over 50. The survival rate for the disease is low because the cancer is often widespread by the time symptoms appear. Treatment usually involves surgical removal of the female reproductive organs (ovaries, fallopian tubes and womb) followed by radiotherapy and anticancer drugs. CT scans are produced by computers that combine multiple X-rays into a single image.
