Caption: Vaginal infection. Light micrograph of a cervical smear showing infection by Peptostreptococcus and Peptococcus bacteria (formerly know as Gaffkya). Two light-blue stained squamous epithelial cells are seen (at centre) containing numerous small coccoid (spherical) bacterial cells, in pairs or groups of four. These Gram-positive bacteria are part of the normal flora found in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, skin and genito-urinary tract. Infections, such as the one here, occur when the body's defences are weakened by (for example) antibiotics, leading to proliferation in the numbers of bacterial cells. Papanicolaou stain. Magnification: x400 at 35mm size.
