Radiotherapy. Light micrograph of a cervical smear showing the effects of radiotherapy on the squamous epithelial cells. The cells seen in this image (at left, top centre and lower right) have taken on bizarre shapes in response to the radiotherapy. An increase in the size of the cytoplasm of irradiated (benign) squamous cells is generally observed. Nuclei may remain normal or show a slight increase in size with many vacuoles seen in the cytoplasm. Papanicolaou stain. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size.
