Caption: Cervical cancer. Light micrograph of a cervical smear showing squamous (epidermoid) carcinoma. The cervix is the narrow passage that connects the uterus with the vagina. Tumour cells are clumped at centre left. They have large rounded nuclei (black) and abundant strongly stained cytoplasm. Squamous carcinoma of the cervix is a common tumour, occurring most often in women over the age of 40. Cervical smear tests are carried out routinely in adult women to try to detect cancer at the earliest stages. Papanicolaou stained. Magnification x400 at 35mm size.
