Caption: Mild dysplasia of cervix. Light micrograph of a cervical smear, showing cells with slightly abnormal growth (mild dysplasia or CIN 1). These squamous epithelial cells have enlarged nuclei, an indication of rapid cell division. These abnormalities, known as mild dyskaryosis, are potentially changes which may lead to cancer. Cancer of the cervix is one of the most common cancers affecting women. A cervical smear test is a method of detecting malignancy. If diagnosed at an early stage, cervical cancer can be treated effectively. Magnification: x40 at 35mm size.
