Caption: Endometriosis. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of the surface of an endometriotic ovarian cyst. Endometriosis occurs when fragments of the uterine lining become displaced, attaching to other sites in the body. Here the fragment is attached to an ovary. The crystals (blue) and red blood cells are due to surgery to remove the cyst. Its surface is similar to a normal uterine lining, with secretory cells (brown) having tiny micro- villi. Cysts form as the displaced fragments bleed monthly, and the blood cannot escape. This causes heavy menstrual bleeding, pain and maybe infertility. Magnification: x1400 at 6x7cm size.
