Caption: Blocked fallopian tube. Coloured hysterosalpingogram (X-ray) the pelvis of a 25 year old woman with a blocked fallopian tube (left). The fallopian tubes lead off either side of the uterus (womb, white, centre). Only the the left tube (right) is visible here as a blockage prevents the contrast medium from entering the right tube. At the end of the left tube is an ovary. The damage may be a result of pelvic inflammation, which is most often caused by sexually transmitted diseases. The blocked fallopian tube may make it harder for the woman to concieve. Treatment is with surgical unblocking or removal of the tube. A hysterosalpingogram is taken after the introduction of a contrast medium to the uterus via a catheter (bottom centre) in the vagina.
