Caption: Balanitis and phimosis in a 5-year-old boy. This view shows balanitis, the inflammation of the head (glans) of the penis, and phimosis, tightness of the foreskin of the penis. The inflammation is the swollen red area at centre, protruding outwards from the surrounding foreskin. The rest of the glans is hidden beneath the foreskin. Balanitis, which is often associated with phimosis, can be treated with antibiotic drugs. If the phimosis causes the balanitis to recur, then circumcision (surgical removal of the foreskin) may be needed.
