Caption: Light micrograph of a horizontal section through a leaf of Ligustrum sp. , showing the distribution of veins. The vascular tissue (veins) consists of the xylem & phloem; the former conducts water & minerals from the roots & the latter carries sugar from the leaves to the rest of the plant. The vascular tissue resembles a road network, through which supplies are carried to all parts of the plant. The small round cells lying between the veins are the mesophyll cells comprising the leaf. These contain a large vacuole (white) surrounded by numerous chloroplasts (brown). Magnification: x40 at 35mm size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 4.10, page 72.
