Caption: Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lower epidermis of a rose leaf, Rosa sp. , showing open stomatal pores covering the waxy surface (appearing like gaping mouths). The stomatal pores regulate the passage of gas between the exterior & interior of the leaf. The open state is more representative of the leaf during daylight; at night or during periods of low light intensity they remain closed. Mag. X 300 (10x8).
