Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of a fractured turnip leaf, Brassica rapa, showing the two mesophyll layers; the palisade mesophyll (top) & the spongy mesophyll (bottom). The palisade cells, in tightly packed rows, contain chloroplasts, where the light reactions of photosynthesis take place to produce sugar for the plant. Below, in the spongy mesophyll, the cells are loosely associated with large air spaces & few chloroplasts. This layer is involved in the circulation of gases exchanged with the environment through pores (stomata) in the epidermis. The lower epidermis, in contact with the spongy mesophyll, has more stomata than the upper. Mag: X700 (at 10x8 size).
