Caption: Light micrograph (oblique Spectral-Rheinberg contrast) of the leaf epidermis of a chive, Allium schoenoprasum. The section was taken from above the bulb, where the cells are beginning to show colour, and shows rows of oblong, epidermal, cells (especially clear in top three rows of cell). The epidermal cells are obscured at the bottom of the image by the overlying, elongated oval cells of the cuticle. A bulb is a modified leaf structure used for food storage; its formation depends on the close arrangement of leaves on a short stem, a typical feature of monocotyledonous herbs such as the chive and its relative, the onion. Magnification: X 400 (35mm).
