Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph of the upper surface of a Coleus leaf, Coleus sp. (family: Labiatae), showing the ridges of pointed hairs, glandular and non-glandular trichomes that cover the leaf surface. Glandular trichomes are rounded and exude the plant resin. The ridge of large hairs running down the centre of the image is located over a vein in the leaf. Leaf veins are used to transport water and mineral salts throughout the leaf surface, and remove carbohydrates produced during photosynthesis. Magnification: X41 at 35mm size. original is bw print b745/098.
