Caption: Thermoscope. Artwork of a patient using a thermoscope or early thermometer. Santorio Santorio is credited with inventing this device (c.1612), which involves placing a long narrow water-filled tube in a patient's mouth. Although Santorio's claim is controversial, Galileo is known to have written about the device, he is documented as the first to have added a numerical scale.
