Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of the of a marihuana plant, Cannabis sativa, (family: Moraceae). The leaf surface is covered with long cystolyth hairs (containing calcium carbonate and other organic materials) and glandular trichomes (not obvious in image). In the adult leaf, the trichomes secrete a resin that contains the euphoriant drug tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The leaf epidermis appears as a quilted carpet below the mass of hairs.
