Skull. Engraving of a human skull, seen from the front. The skull protects the brain, eyes & ears and provides attachment for the muscles of the face & mouth. It is made up of 28 separate bones. The face bones include the lower jaw (mandible, 9), the upper jaw (maxilla, 7), and cheekbones (zygomatic bone, 8). The nasal bones are seen (below 2), whilst the thin vertical bone in the nasal cavity is the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid (5). The cranium protecting the brain in- cludes the frontal bone (1). The bone at the back of the eyeball (4) is the greater wing of the sphenoid, a bone that forms part of the floor of the cranium. Image taken from a 1901 book.
