Caption: Muscles. Historical artwork of a male figure, dissected to expose his muscles. It is from De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem (The Seven Books On The Structure of the Human Body, 1543) by the Flemish anatomist Andreas Vesalius (1514-64). This was the first accurate book on human anatomy and challenged the widely-accepted teachings of the Roman physician Galen. The illustrations were made directly by him or under his direction.
