Caption: The first angiogram. View of the first angiogram showing the hand's blood vessels. This was made in 1896 in Vienna soon after the discovery of X-rays. The angiogram is of the hand of a corpse, the blood vessels are clearly defined. Angiography is a branch of medical diagnostic X-ray photography. A chemical which is opaque to X-rays is injected into the blood vessels. This will make the blood vessels visible in the X-ray photograph. Angiography can be used to show narrowed coronary arteries and defective heart valves.
