Caption: Foot arteries. Historical illustration of the arteries and muscles of the ankle and foot. The arteries are coloured red to show that they supply oxygenated blood. The main artery supplying the foot and ankle is the posterior tibial artery, seen descending through the ankle in the top diagram. The Achilles tendon (white) is shown running up the back of the calf muscle in the bottom diagram. Both diagrams show the strap-like annular ligament running from the heel around the front of the ankle. Colour lithograph by Fairland from The Vessels of the Human Body, 1837. Based on drawings by J. Swandale.
