Caption: Diagram showing the brain and the senses, taken from "Margaritia philosophiae" by G.Reisch and published at Freibourg in 1503. The diagram shows nerves from the sensory detectors of sight, hearing, taste and smell linked to a portion in the front of the brain. This combines the actual sense signals with 'fantasy' and 'imagination' to form a perception. This is passed to a second area in the brain (centre) where cognitive processes are based. Finally, the analysed perception is passed to the memory area at the back of the head.
