Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph of scutiform (shield-like) leaf hairs on the undersurface of a leaf from the Japanese evergreen shrub Eleagans pungens maculata. It is widely grown for its foliage, which is yellow & green on top ("maculata") & brown underneath due to the hairs. These elaborate leaf hairs shield the stomata (pores in the leaf surface which regulate gaseous exchange with the environment) & prevent water loss during dry conditions or high winds. Magnification: x43 at 35mm size. Original is BW print b745/088.
