Caption: Brain chamber. Artwork by Leonardo Da Vinci's of the head and brain chamber. The illustration is known as calvaria (Dome of the skull). This appeared in one of Da Vinci's many medical notebooks. The illustration is an early diagram of the nervous system. The top of the spinal cord connecting the brain to the rest of the body is illustrated at lower right. The optic nerve (centre), connecting the eyes to the brain is also illustrated. It became the standard reference illustration for the renaissance man. Da Vinci (1452-1519) was an Italian scientist, engineer, mathematician, architect, painter and sculptor.
