Caption: Nervous system. Historical artwork of various parts of the nervous system. At upper centre the brain is seen from above, clearly showing the two hemispheres of the cerebrum. Below this, the brain is seen from below, showing the cerebellum (at the bottom) and the sectioned brainstem (white, between halves of cerebellum). Diagrams of the spinal cord are seen on either side of the brain. Nerves in the face and neck are seen at left and right. The cerebrum is concerned with conscious thought, while the cerebellum controls balance and posture. Artwork taken from the "Iconographic Encyclopaedia of Science, Literature and Art", published in 1851.
